Samarkand

 


The most evocative of all the cities of Uzbekistan, it definitely has a mythical resonance. This is the most important and well-known city of the Silk Road; it features Registan (meaning: sandy place), the most impressive Muslim monument I have ever seen. Meticulously restored, you need to pay a fee to get in the perimeter of the monument. There is a Light and Sound show in the evening, not to be missed. Although the city is big and much more developed than all the others we saw, the monuments are not very far from each other and you can see them in max 3 days. Revisit them at night, they look even more sublime! Don’t miss on the Amir Timur statue, although this is definitely not the first one you will see during this trip…
